Childhood Asthma Research Program ─ Managing Asthma and Sleep in Teens
Rhode Island/Hasbro Children’s Hospital – Brown Medical School

Project MAST (Managing Asthma and Sleep in Teens) is an intervention project within the Childhood Asthma Research Program. It aims to develop and pilot an integrated, school-based intervention that improves sleep quality through focusing on asthma self-management and sleep hygiene in urban high school students. The intervention will be delivered by advanced undergraduate and graduate interns.

Under the guidance of full time project staff, interns will be trained to work in local high schools of the greater Providence area to deliver intervention sessions. This includes group sessions and one-on one sessions with teens. Other activities will include regular meetings with the intervention team members for supervision to discuss sessions, receive support, and review any other feedback. The successful applicant will:

• Be a junior/senior undergraduate or a graduate student in any field relating to healthcare who is interested in receiving research and hands-on intervention experience from trained professionals
• Have strong communication and organizational skills
• Be comfortable working with high school teens
• Be comfortable public speaking
• Be able to make a time commitment of at least 1 year
• Preferably have experience with research methods (e.g. through coursework) and exposure to intervention development
• Preferably have his/her own transportation

The internship requires a time commitment of 10-15 hours per week and interns can be compensated through research or course credit. Interns will have the opportunity to build strong relationships for key future professional references. In addition, this opportunity will provide excellent training by successful research professionals and public health experience for students considering pursuing graduate studies in psychology or public health, as well as those planning to apply to nursing or medical school.
